DNB Program

Diplomate of National Board (DNB) is the title awarded by the National Board of Examinations (NBE), an autonomous academic body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India to candidates who successfully complete their postgraduate or postdoctoral medical education under it. Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, Kolkata is an accredited teaching unit for the below mentioned courses.

In 1975, the Government of India established the National Board of Examinations, an autonomous organization Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, with the prime objective of conducting postgraduate and postdoctoral courses of high and uniform national standard in various disciplines of modern medicine and allied sciences on an All-India single point entrance basis.The Board conducts its postgraduate and postdoctoral programmes in teaching hospitals accredited by it and in medical colleges accredited by the Medical Council of India.

The degrees are recognized by the Government of India and a Gazette order is published for the same. Also, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has issued notification mentioning that DNB should always be considered equivalent to MD/MS/DM/MCh. The list of recognised qualifications awarded by the Board in various broad and super specialties as approved by the Government of India are included in the first schedule of the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956.

The DNB qualifications awarded by the National Board of Examinations have been equated with postgraduate and postdoctoral qualifications awarded by other Indian universities for all purposes, including appointment to teaching posts.

Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, Kolkata got excellent track record of 100% pass out in all the Specialty and Super- specialty departments. It got good stock of books in its central library, a dedicated internet library with more than 8000 e-books and more than 2000 journals. We got a huge collection of DVD (National Board DVD) for better e-learning. Separate independent committee “Institutional Ethical Committee” and “Scientific Committee” are constituted with all the norms and regulation in place.

Dedicated class rooms/ small (100 capacity) and big (500 capacity) auditorium/ departmental teaching area and above all dedicated bedside hands-on teaching facility are available for the students. A committed team of executives are managing the entire DNB program.

Masters and Fellowship Programs

Master in Emergency medicine (MEM)

The Masters in Emergency Medicine (MEM) programme with University of Maryland, United States of America, has been specifically designed to train the young and aspiring medical graduates in handling common emergency conditions and gear them to face day to day challenges faced in an emergency room.

Goals:
  • Adequate knowledge in triaging the patients.
  • Identify and treat life threatening emergencies.
  • To deal with non life threatening emergency conditions and refer to appropriate specialty if needed.
  • Adequate skills to resuscitate a critically ill patient.
  • To participate in academic activity, emergency medicine conferences.
  • Understanding how to deliver emergency health care in humanitarian crises.
  • Develop administrative skills in managing the department.
Objective of MEM course:

The primary objective of this training program is to produce Emergency physicians with necessary knowledge, skill and attitude to effectively diagnose and manage, a wide range of clinical problems in Emergency Medicine in the community or in secondary/tertiary care setting. Special emphasis is placed on the relatively common emergencies and treatable disorders. Possession of clinical skills, required for making a diagnosis is given utmost importance. Through this programme, the physician attains competency in life saving emergency interventions, use of the various diagnostic tests, and interpretation of test results intelligently & promptly. In addition, trained Emergency physician should possess knowledge and skills of the entire medical and surgical specialty and appropriately deliver to save the critically ill patient within the golden hour. It is considered mandatory for the post graduate residents from this specialty to be familiar with the fundamentals of research methodology. In order to be considered a competent Internist, a resident in Emergency medicine must possess humanistic qualities, attitudes and behavior necessary for the development of appropriate patient- doctor relationship.

Duration: 36 months

Thesis & Research Projects: As per the University of Maryland, USA curriculum each trainee must complete writing the thesis at the end of 3rd year and copies have to be submitted to UOM and Hospital Library. Thesis shall be submitted at least six months before the theoretical and clinical / practical examination. And a minimum of two research papers have to be published or accepted for publication before appearing for final year examinations.

Attendance: As per MCI guidelines, attendance of eighty percent (80%) is mandatory for each calendar year during the training period.

Log Book: Log Book should be maintained on regular basis and all entries should be approved and signed by Course Director/Programme Coordinator on a regular basis.
